The Government of Abu Dhabi (UAE) announced the results of the competitive selection for the construction of the “world’s largest solar power plant” Al Dhafra solar PV project. Its installed capacity will be 2 GW. The tender was announced by the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC). The lowest price of bids received was AED 0.0497, or $0.0135 per kilowatt hour. The quoted price was offered by a consortium of the French EDF and the Chinese manufacturer of solar modules JinkoSolar (the largest supplier of photovoltaic panels in the world).

The previous record was set in January this year in Qatar (1.567 US cents per kilowatt hour). French business also had a hand in it – the oil and gas concern Total was a member of the winning consortium. He took part in this tender in the UAE, and again together with the Japanese Marubeni. Other finalists: ACWA Power with Shanghai Electric; Engie and International Power; Japanese Softbank and Italian oil and gas concern Eni.

The winners of the tender will receive the ownership of 40% of a special company established to implement the project. The rest will be controlled by the government of Abu Dhabi represented by the local energy company Abu Dhabi Power Corporation and other organizations. The Al Dhafra power plant is due to start operating in the second quarter of 2022.

In 2019, the 1.2 GW Noor Abu Dhabi solar plant, “the world’s largest single-plot solar PV plant,” was commissioned at the UAE. Abu Dhabi plans to cover half of its electricity consumption with renewable energy by 2030.
